Italian Expressionist Painter and Sculptor, 1884-1920 Amedeo Clemente Modigliani (July 12, 1884 ?C January 24, 1920) was an Italian artist of Jewish heritage, practicing both painting and sculpture, who pursued his career for the most part in France. Modigliani was born in Livorno (historically referred to in English as Leghorn), in northwestern Italy and began his artistic studies in Italy before moving to Paris in 1906. Influenced by the artists in his circle of friends and associates, by a range of genres and art movements, and by primitive art, Modigliani's œuvre was nonetheless unique and idiosyncratic. Josefa of Ayala
1630-1684,Portuguese painter and engraver. She was the daughter of the Portuguese painter Baltazar Gomes Figueira (1597-1674) and a Spanish lady, Doea Catarina de Ayala y Cabrera. After the restoration of the Portuguese monarchy in 1640 the family moved to Coimbra. Here Josefa began her apprenticeship under her father, a painter of landscapes, still-lifes and religious works, who in 1644 painted the retable of Nossa Senhora da Graea, Coimbra, in the naturalist-tenebrist style he had learnt in Seville in the circles of Juan del Castillo,
BARBARI, Jacopo de
Italian Early Renaissance Painter, ca.1440-1515 Italian painter and printmaker. He was the first Italian Renaissance artist of note who travelled to the courts of Germany and the Netherlands. His earliest known works appear to date from the late 1490s, suggesting that he was born c. 1460-70. The birthdate of c. 1440 traditionally assigned to him reflects the misinterpretation of a document of 1512 in which his patron, Margaret of Austria, Regent of the Netherlands, awarded him a stipend because of his 'weakness and old age'. In fact, at this date a man could be described as 'old' while in his fifties or even younger.
Nils von Dardel
Swedish, 1888-1943,Swedish painter. After a short time at the School of Art in Stockholm, which he found too conservative, he travelled for the first time to Paris in 1910. There he immediately made contact with the Scandinavian artists who were pupils of Matisse and with them made his debut in Stockholm in 1912 as a member of the Man of the Year 1909 group. Under the influence of Cubism, Dardel painted a townscape of Senlis, in a style that eventually developed into the sophisticated naivety of Funeral in Senlis (1913; Stockholm, Mod. Mus.).
